Win4Skin brings the community together to raise funds to tackle cancer and to support youth sport programs in Alberta. Since 2010, the Win4Skin fundraiser has raised nearly a million dollars in support of cancer research through the Mary Johnston Chair in Melanoma Research and in support of sport programs for underprivileged youth through the Owen Schlosser Endowment Fund.
What is Win4Skin?
Win4Skin is an annual fundraiser consisting of a banquet and other fundraising events held within the community. The funds raised support two important causes: the Owen Schlosser Endowment fund through the Edmonton Community Foundation, which helps youth access sport who would not otherwise have the opportunity and the Mary Johnston Chair in Melanoma Research, a fund that supports melanoma research at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton.
How did Win4Skin start?
Win4Skin was started in 2010 following the passing of Owen Schlosser, a University of Alberta athlete, from malignant melanoma. After several months of planning, the first-ever Win4Skin 3-on-3 Street Hockey Tournament was held on March 6, 2010 at the Brookside Community Hall. Twenty four teams registered for what was supposed to be a 3-on-3 ice hockey tournament, but changed course shortly before the event due to weather conditions.
Despite the change of plans, the first Win4Skin turned out to be an enormous success, raising more than $32,000 to be shared between the two charities. Players and organizers alike agreed it was one of the best events of the year. With the success of the first event, we began brainstorming for a bigger and brighter future for Win4Skin. A banquet was added in the second year and the street hockey tournament evolved into a host of fundraising events including a golf tournament. Since Win4Skin began, family and friends of both Owen and Mary have come together to raise funds and celebrate the lives of these two incredible people.

Win4Skin's Impact
Over the past decade the Win4Skin fundraiser has raised nearly a million dollars for our two charities. This past year was our largest event yet, bringing together hundreds of friends, family members and supporters. We are continually amazed by the support of the community to come together to celebrate the lives Owen and Mary and to make positive contributions to our community.
